Your Body Has Feelings...
By Maria Chah, DOM, AP & Jennifer Troyan
Have you ever had a health issue or a persistent ache in your body? When you go to the doctor, they can’t find anything wrong, or you get treatment and the issue doesn’t go away or there is no known cause for what’s happening? There is a possibility that your body is trying to tell you something. Did you know that when things bother or eat away at us emotionally it can appear as a symptom within your body?
This is so fascinating!
There is so much out there about the mind-body connection. More and more information is popping up about the emotions-body connection. Sometimes you need someone to be a sounding board for you to help you figure it out. Often, once an emotional issue gets resolved you’ll find the ache or nagging pain within your body goes away too. Our bodies do so much for us including carrying our woes, worries, joys and triumphs. Have you ever felt exceptionally good and healthy because great things are going on in your life? What about when you are in a brand new loving relationship? You feel amazing! Nothing will slow you down, you have unbounded energy and might even feel like skipping around, dancing, smiling a whole lot and even singing. Your body is loving that!
Think about how you are feeling or if you are dealing with a difficult situation, notice your body, is there anything going on there? For example, if you are anxious or fearful about something you might be having indigestion issues. Pain in your hands could mean you are holding on too tight to something. Anger and resentment can show up as jaw pain. Weakness might be a signal that you need some mental rest. If you are retaining fluids in your body, it could be that you’re stuck in your thinking.
The above examples are from a valuable resource - an excellent book by Louise Hay called, You Can Heal Your Life.
So, what to do about it?
Care deeply for yourself.
Use contemplation as your ally.
Try journaling about what’s bothering you. For me I find this to be a very good exercise.
Talk to a trusted friend or professional, you might have realizations just in the telling.
Try: meditating, acupuncture, and/or affirmations.
Be hopeful. Just like the rainbow in the hand above, there’s hope and grace. Give that to yourself. The rainbow represents the light within you.
Trust yourself. You have everything you need (it’s ok if you need help accessing it).
Talk to someone who is experienced and that can help (Dr. Maria can!). If you can work through that thing that is “sticking in your craw,” you’ll see your body will naturally heal itself. This is a great way to prevent chronic issues from happening as well.
Your body is incredibly resilient, yet it needs your help, to listen to what it’s saying. It’s all about taking the time to honor what your body is telling you and making the necessary connections.
