Summer Spotlight - Reducing Your Pet’s Anxiety with CBD Oil

Father’s Day, Solstice, 4th of July... Summer is here at Chah Acutherapy! We generally focus our news articles on living a healthy, stress-free lifestyle and how acupuncture and natural herbal medicine can assist and support you on the path to that goal. In fact, you can check out titles such as Beating the Summer Heat with Acupuncture on our website, and as always, we are looking forward to seeing you for therapy and relaxation in these hot summer months.

With 4th of July just around the corner, Chah Acutherapy’s June newsletter is going to the dogs! We recently partnered with CBD BioCare to bring you access to their line of top quality CBD oil products that are derived from pure CBD hemp plant and terpenoids. We are getting very positive feedback on these products and wanted to share that in addition to their therapeutic and cosmetic lines for people, CBD BioCare also offers a hemp oil product for pets. CBD oil is rapidly becoming a popular treatment for reducing anxiety in dogs who experience panic over fireworks and severe thunderstorms. Read on for more details, but now is a great time to discuss CBD oils with your holistic veterinarian and, of course, always seek the advice of your vet before embarking on any course of treatment.

How is CBD Oil being used with dogs?

Like people, cannabis oil is being used to successfully treat a number of disorders and symptoms in dogs. From seizures, anxiety and stress, to pain and arthritis, and even symptoms of cancer, veterinarians are discovering that their canine patients can benefit from the use of CBD Oil.

For anxiety and stress in particular, cannabinoids interact with a series of receptors throughout the body that help dogs regulate and cope with anxiety, pain and nausea. This type of relief has two major advantages: First, it works with the dog’s body to lower anxiety naturally. Secondly, traditional prescription medications that essentially sedate your dog often come with risky side effects, such as liver or kidney damage, so prolonged use is not advised. When dosed properly, cannabis oil does not damage the kidney, liver, or intestinal tract of the dog and, because the THC is not present, the dog is not high. It should be noted, however, that THC can be toxic to pets and ‘pot’ should never be given to your pets.

Quality and Quantity

As with any natural or prescribed medication, you should consult your veterinarian about dosage and be sure to be your dog’s advocate when it comes to sourcing CBD oil for your pet. When we started to research manufacturers of CBD oils for Chah Acutherapy, we discovered a vast number of products on the market, but not a lot of information about how they are sourced or processed. In fact, it’s a virtual Wild West of manufacturers, pricing and purity. As with any plant based, farmed, herbal medication, it’s critical that the source be pure and grown organically to ensure that you are not introducing unwanted toxins into the body that you are trying to heal. Further, as a therapeutic treatment for people or animals, there should be zero THC in the CBD oils.
